I Thought I Knew

I thought I knew
The darkness too well
Until I lived to tell
Tales of glimmering lights in murky cells

I thought I knew
The roses all along
Until, before long
It seemed they turned into menacing thorn

I thought I knew
A quiet too intense
Until the mute sirens
Screamed in the cacophony of silence

I thought I knew
Every orb in the sky
Until I came by
A million stars that had never met my eye

But I think I know
Like I thought I knew
When I’d seen it all through
That of our ephemeral lives we have no clue
